Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge

People often associate Sydney with either the Sydney Opera House or the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Which is not strange at all, as these are the two icons of the city. When visiting Sydney, it is therefore a must to see and visit these two attractions. But you do not really have to stop after having seen the Sydney Harbour Bridge as you can also climb it!

Bridge Climb Tour

Climbing the 134 meter tall bridge isn't something new, already around 1950, people walked to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Illegal and without any safety equipment, but they manager to get to the top. Although you are still a daredevil when you climb the bridge today, it is no longer illegal. From 1998, Sydney Bridge Climb offers the possibility to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Before actually being able to climb the bridge, you need to sign different forms, stating that you know the risks involved. Then, you need to pass a breathalyzer test. Apparently it is not allowed to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge in drunk conditions. If you pass, you will be given a jumpsuit. You have to empty all your pockets as they don't want something to fall down from the bridge onto the car deck. Right when you think you can start the climb, you are given a climbing harness that connect to the cables along the walking path. After receiving the last instructions, a guide will lead you all the way to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The climb itself is not hard at all: it is not really steep and because you can't really see what is below, it is not scary neither. While climbing, the guide provide explanations about the bridge and its surroundings. As you are not allowed to bring your own camera, the guide will take a photograph of the entire group. Then you cross to the other side of the bridge and walk back down again. Upon arriving at the starting point, you will receive you personal possessions. When you have your wallet again, you can buy the group photo made at the top of the bridge... buy, like climbing the bridge isn't expensive enough already.

From the 134 meter high bridge, you have a great view over Sydney. However, we are not entirely sure if it was worth the money: depending on which type of climb and at which time of the day you climb, prices range between $158 and $363. Rather expensive indeed, but at least you can say you have climbed one of the icons of Sydney.
